Annual Campus Security & Fire Report Notice

Issued: Pursuant to the Higher Education Act & Amendments, Public Law 110-315 (HEOA)

Distributed: September 30, 2010

 

Grinnell College publishes an annual campus crime report for Grinnell College, Grinnell in London, and the Grinnell in Washington programs every year.  The Campus Security report includes statistics for the most recent three year period concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus , in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by Grinnell College, and on public property within, or adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report includes institutional policies concerning campus security such as policies concerning alcohol and drug use, crime prevention, and reporting of crimes, sexual assault, and other matters.  There is also a Fire Safety Report available which contains fire information concerning the Grinnell College campus.   As of October 1, 2010 the Fire Safety Report is required by federal law.

Park Street Parking Rules Change

 

To: Members of the Campus Community

 

From:  Members of the Campus Parking Committee 

 

As we prepare to begin the fall semester, we are letting you know of parking changes the City of Grinnell has enacted for vehicles on Park Street.

 

Beginning July 23, 2010, vehicles may park on Park Street between 6^th and 8^th avenues from 5 a.m. through 1 a.m..  Overnight parking will not be available.  No parking will be available on Park Street between 8^th and 10^th avenues at any time.

 

The City of Grinnell changed the parking rules in the interest of public safety.  Emergency vehicles have difficulty driving down Park Street when cars are parked there.  We ask for your cooperation as we assist emergency responders in accessing our campus and the homes of our neighbors.  Due to the importance of emergency access, the city may ticket and tow cars parked in no parking zones. 

 

For your convenience, we have created a map  highlighting campus parking areas.  Parking permits are required to park vehicles on campus.  Students, faculty, and staff may obtain campus parking permits at Campus Safety and Security, 1432 East Street (across from the East Campus residence halls parking lot).  Please pay special attention to parking signage to make sure vehicles are parked in appropriate spaces. 

 

The College intends to expand parking on the PEC site,  but this will not be complete until next spring.  In the meantime we will be adding a small lot west of the pool to provide additional faculty/staff and visitor spaces.

Parking-Graduation Weekend/Graduation Day

Over this weekend and Commencement morning (Monday May 24^th ) we are asking that you not park your vehicles in the interior parking areas of the campus if possible. The campus has a limited number of parking spaces and we are trying to have as many parking spaces as possible for guests.

Block Street Party on High Street Today

 

 

The off-campus end of the year celebration known as the High Street Block Party will occur today on High Street/Near 6^thAvenue.  Here are a few tips for making your celebration more enjoyable and safe.

 

1.            For those of you who are 21 years of age and choose to consume alcohol,  please make sure to wear your wristband at all times.

2.         Remember that all alcoholic beverages must remain within the barriers that block off High Street between 5th and 6th.

3.         Open container violations will be strictly enforced outside the boundaries.

4.         Please assist in keeping the neighborhood as clean as possible by helping to clean during AND after the Block Party.

5.            Please be sure to eat when drinking.

6.            Be safe when crossing the highway in that area.

7.            Portable bathrooms are placed in the area for your convenience.

8.         Be safe and have fun.

 

Faculty/Staff  please be aware of students crossing the road (6^th Avenue/High Street) and be careful when driving in that area.

The national weather service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Poweshiek County.   There could be winds as high as 60mph and large size hail.  Please be alert to severe weather throughout the day and weekend.  Please listen radio, tv and other news media outlets for the latest on the weather throughout the day and weekend.

Update: (Tornado Drill Cancelled Today between 10:00-10:30am)

 

Campus Wide Drill cancelled today Wednesday April 7, 2010, between 10:00-10:30am.

 

Drill Cancelled-Grinnell College Campus Wide Tornado Drill Cancelled Today (Wednesday April 7)

 

The Grinnell College campus will not participate in the statewide tornado drill today.  A tornado drill will take place at a later date for the Grinnell College campus.  However, this morning between 10:00am and 10:30pm, the state of Iowa will participate in a test of the statewide tornado warning system. The city of Grinnell will activate the emergency weather sirens, and air messages over emergency radios.  This will be a test only.

 

The Campus Safety & Security Office urges everyone on campus to take this opportunity to become familiar with how you would deal with a true weather emergency and become aware of your surroundings and where you would go to seek shelter.

The power to the campus was restored at around 4:10am, wednesday morning. Please report any damage or other problems that you are experiencing to the Campus Safety & Security Office. Facilities Management workers are on campus at this time handling different problems and alarms throughout the campus.

The National Weather Service has now issued a Tornado Warning for Poweshiek County.    Please listen for the city of Grinnell siren to sound which will mean a Tornado is close.  Please seek shelter at this time.

Auditoriums, gymnasiums, and other structures with high, wide-span roofs do not offer good protection. Stay away from windows and exterior doors.

April 7th Wednesday Morning (Statewide Tornado Drill)

 

Severe Weather Awareness Week - April 5-9, 2010

 

The Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service have declared the week of April 5th through April 9th, 2010 Severe Weather Awareness Week.  

 

Severe Weather Awareness Week is an annual event to remind Iowans that severe weather is part of living in our state and that understanding the risks and how to respond to them can save lives. 2008 was a historic year across Iowa with 105 tornadoes including the EF5 tornado that struck Parkersburg and other areas in northeast Iowa.

 

During Severe Weather Awareness Week, the National Weather Service will promote severe-weather safety by issuing informative Public Information Statements. The highlight of the week will be the statewide tornado drill on Wednesday morning, April 7, 2010.
