Campus Alert Bulletin 10-000067 (Possible Drug Use)

By:  Stephen A. Briscoe, Director of Campus Safety/Security, Grinnell College

In compliance with the "Timely Notice" provision of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics act of 1998 the Grinnell College Campus Safety/Security Office is giving notice that it has received information concerning "Roofies" (Rohypnol)  possibly being used on campus.

The Grinnell College Campus Safety/Security Office urges the Grinnell College campus to be alert to the possibility of the drugs being used on campus and take steps to protect themselves.  Date rape drugs, commonly "Roofies", Rohypnol, GHB and Ketamine, can be slipped into an unsuspecting person's drink at anytime.  Rapid and severe intoxication follows, along with dramatically reduced inhibitions and memory loss.  In this condition, anyone can be extremely vulnerable to an assault.

To protect yourself, do not leave drinks unattended and be wary of accepting drinks from people you do not know well.  Do not except illegal drugs either in liquid form or use inhalants such as joints or cigarettes given to you by others.  To be even more careful, make sure that you open and pour your own drinks, and don't share drinks with others.  It is also wise to use the buddy system while socializing-when you go out with friends, agree to keep an eye on one another and to go home together.  If a friend starts to exhibit symptoms of drug ingestion, seek medical help immediately. Signs to look for include: dizziness and/or nausea, memory loss, breathing or motion difficulties, and acting disproportionately intoxicated relative to the amount of alcohol consumed.

The Grinnell College Campus Safety & Security Office urges anyone who believes they or a friend has been the victim of an illegal drug to immediately contact the Safety/Security Office at 269-4600.  Victims of the drug can also contact the Health Center on campus at 269-3230, College Campus Sexual Assault Coordinators Office, 269-4981, Domestic Violence Alternatives/Sexual Assault Center, 1-800-779-3512, Residential Life RLC's 269-3700, Poweshiek County Mental Health Center, 236-6137, Grinnell Regional Medical Center, 236-2380 or the Grinnell Police Department at 236-2650.
